Research Paper
Final Exam: The Research Essay
For the final exam, you submit a well-developed, three (3) to five (5) page essay based on a work of literature which we have not otherwise read for this class. Prior to submitting the essay, you are required to submit a research proposal, which should be accepted and approved before completing the essay. This proposal is worth one (1) assignment grade. Below is a list of suggested literary works to explore (from The Norton Anthology of World Literature: Shorter Third Edition Volumes 1 and 2): Volume 1: “The Babylonian Creation Epic” (Enuma Elish) The Odyssey by Homer Oedipus the King by Sophocles The Aeneid by Virgil Beowulf The Divine Comedy by Dante Don Quixote by Miguel Cervantes Hamlet, Prince of Denmark by William Shakespeare
Volume 2: “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” by Mary Wollstonecraft “The Death of Ivan Ilych” by Leo Tolstoy “A Room of One’s Own” by Virginia Woolf ‘The Metamorphosis” by Franz Kafka “Chike’s School Days” by Chinua Achebe “Death Constant Beyond Love” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez “Yellow Woman” by Leslie Marmon Silko “The Perforated Sheet” by Salman Rushdie
The Research Proposal After you have selected and read a piece of literature from the suggested list of works, begin doing some research on it. What literary aspects of it are other scholars interested in? What aspects are you interested in? You need to find at least two sources to complete your research proposal. Write a brief statement of about 100 - 200 words (one or two paragraphs) in which you indicate the idea or subject you wish to explore, explain how you plan to proceed, and state your tentative thesis (the main point you wish to prove). If you are not yet able to state a thesis, frame the question or questions you hope to answer after further research (the answer will become your thesis). Include with your proposal a bibliography of at least two (2) items related to the topic or useful for your paper (including items on relevant related subjects). The proposal is worth one (1) assignment grade. Format This essay should follow MLA formatting guidelines (see the MLA template for the research paper or the Purdue OWL https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/). In this essay, use clear and succinct examples from the specified text in order to support your answers, and avoid making broad generalizations or repetitive statements. Finally, be sure to write from the third person point of view unless you are quoting directly from the text. In other words, there should be no sentences beginning with “I think” or “I feel” or “I believe” - nor should there be use of the words “you,” “we,” “us,” etc. - unless it is a part of a quote that you are using to support your ideas.
