GETTING STARTED
While watching each documentary, consider which consumer behaviour concepts are relevant to the marketing aspects discussed and presented in each film. We will debrief after each film to build upon this list.
Step 1: Watch the film
Take detailed notes of events, quotes, and peoples’ names for easy reference.
Step 2: Brainstorm concepts
Drawing from our course, make a list of various concepts and how they might connect with the film.
Step 3: Begin with a thesis
In selecting a consumer behaviour concept for your thesis, be sure you are comfortable with its meaning and how it can be evidenced in the film. Your thesis is an argument and a statement that suggests you are out to prove something. Your thesis must addresses why this concept is relevant or critical to the documentary. (We will discuss and practice thesis writing in class: but remember, it should not be an obvious fact, but instead demonstrate that you are taking a position or answering a question.)
Step 4: Organize evidence
To support your thesis, you should be able to provide approximately 2-4 examples from the film in order to make your submission persuasive. Make sure you are citing evidence from the film (events, quotes, or data, etc.) and a definition of your concept from the textbook.
Step 5: Write your reflective paragraph and conclusion
It is important to note that up to this point, your writing should not include personal pronouns (such as, “I”, or “We”, or “You”) but instead be objective and fact-based. This would include any bias-sounding adjectives such as “terrific” or “incredible” or “terrible” that can’t be supported with specific data. Your personal reflective statements can, however, include your own experience and reaction to your above analysis.
