Module 4 Discussion

Go to Public Health Jobs and search for a job in either the fields of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Your original post should discuss the following items.1.) What is the job?2.) What education is required for this job?3.) What is the salary range for the job?4.) Are there any requirements for the job besides education?5.) How does this job fit in either the field of Epidemiology and Biostatistics ?Then, comment on one or more student’s original post by providing additional information you found about the job and what they could do to obtain the job.

Module 4 Activity & Discussion

1. View the1993 NOVA documentary video “The Deadly Deception,” which tells the story of several African American men from rural Alabama who were unknowing participants in a US government-run human experiment of untreated syphilis, also known as the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.


2. Browse the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) website "The Tuskegee Timeline." Note that events pertaining to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study spanned over 100 years, the study continued until 1972, and a national apology was not given until 1997!


3. Discuss the Tuskegee Syphilis Study with your assigned group. Consider the testimonies of the men that were interviewed in the documentary with regard to such things as: the timing of events, the people involved as investigators, and the specifics of the experiment, including procedures performed, “treatments” offered, incentives for participation, actions taken to withhold penicillin, etc. You must provide at least one substantive group discussion post by Thursday at 11:59PM ET.


4. Then, suggest and discuss ways that the actions of the investigators of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study violated the three basic ethical principles of research involving human subjects outlined in “The Belmont Report” of 1979. You must provide at least one additional group discussion post by Sunday at 11:59PM ET.

Module 5 Discussion

Discuss how the lay public perceives risk and how this differs from environmental health professionals. From your assigned reading on risk communication, identify at least one major tenet of risk communication and discuss why it is important to incorporate when communicating risk to the public.

Postings must be a minimum of 150 words and no longer than approximately 250 words in length, with proper grammar and spelling.  No postings linked into the discussion board will be accepted. Postings must be written directly onto the discussion board so that they are immediately visible to encourage peer reading.

This assignment is both a treasure hunt and a “context assessment”. You will find all of the clues below. The treasure is worth up to 20 points.Review the Environmental Health and Social Determinants of Health topics on the Healthy People 2020 Topics and Objectives web page, published by the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP, 2019).Choose one of these topics you would like to examine more closely. Read the information provided in the Overview tab. List the key themes or areas, along with one issue associated with each one. Next, select ONE of the issues, and briefly describe how the factor impacts health disparities. Therefore, reflect on how this variable may affect your personal context (your neighborhood, your city, our region) and explain your personal take on it.

Include one additional in-text citation from the textbook or other assigned reading that references this issue as well.Responses should be approximately 100-200 words. Include at least two different in-text reference citations from the assigned readings. In-text reference citations e.g., (Author, Date) should be used for attribution when summarizing content (see the guidance provided in the Additional Resources folder on the course home page). A full reference citation is not required for this assignment.
