Abstract
Dana hall is one of the last girl boarding schools that were established in the New England area. McFarlan, Leonard, and Tritter were stakeholders that the active involvement in falling enrollments and strained finances, which set the tone for the mission review. The organizational structure of the institution is highly based on the political framework. The goal and decision, in this case, were centered on bargaining negotiation within the team o stakeholder. This process changed after the system was reviewed to integrated effective and effective processes of making decisions and engaging transformation roadmap. The change raised a point of change from the social stakeholder's perspective and transformed to a general point of view and took a revolution of progressive manifestation in the school. Today, Dana is a highly recognized girl’s school that developed to a modern. Related challenges have also developed based on the demographic changes and strongly affected is performance. Management has, therefore, stepped in with policy and mitigation measures to conserve the institution and command it continuously. The predominating scope of raising and restoring the institution was implementing a systemic change that would attain a competitive and sustainable advantage. The changing scope was to target management and international policy, which are part and parcel of running the institution.
1) What were the drivers of the problem at Dana Hall in the 1980s?
Dana Hall, girl’s private schools were facing a crisis regarding its mission in the 1980s. The problem started when the social norms shifted from the single-sex school education to the co-education schools. The popularity of the co-education resulted in a decline in the demand for single-sex education (Riordan, 2015). The enrollment at Dana Hall decreased and had a population of 374, which was a decline from the previous people of 450. There was a dramatic decrease in the potential applicants caused by the societal shifts and the change in the demographic trends. The competition between the private schools increased because each school was fighting to maintain its normal enrollments even in the face of the demographic tides.
The school also destabilized after short-lived leaders were appointed to head the school. The school had changed three headmistresses within a period of four years which led to destabilization and also created differences between the trustees, the faculties and the administration. The teachers also showed their dissatisfactions in the school's mode of operations.
The low enrollment of students resulted in a deficit in financial resources. The school required a sport and science hall at this time where the resources had continued to be lower than before. As a result t, there was a need to look for funding to keep the school running. The dilemma in raising funds was if the school could remain faithful to the mission it had, or it should go for mergers and enrollment of the boys to increase the fundings.
The decreasing demand, the change of demographic trends, increased competition and also the shift to co-education from the single-sex schools were the main drivers that resulted in problems in Dana Hall. As a result, the school faced financial challenges and dilemmas in deciding on administrative issues (Riordan, 2015). The difficulty was caused by the change by other girl's schools to merge and admit the boys to increase enrolment and avoid bankruptcy.
2) How vital is Dana Hall's mission statement been in the thirty years?
The mission statement for Dana Hall expressed the school commitment in fostering excellence for the girls in arts, athletics and also in education. The school had a mission of preparing the girls for the choices as well are the challenges that are faced by the women. The school's mission has been an essential tool for the school administration more so when making vital decisions. For instance, when they were turbulence due to the shift to co-education within the region, many schools in its nature changed to boys enrollment and also to mergers so as to maintain their enrolment and also the fundings. However, Dana Hall could not take the route since its mission was strictly on the empowerment of the girls (Riordan, 2015). Changing the purpose would raise more questions than answers, and therefore the school had to follow its mission strictly. The task was thus crucial in giving the school the direction and the route to follow.
The mission has enabled Dana School to remain the only standing all-girls school in the region. Through the task, the school has been able to provide the girls with various opportunities of leading, learning and also succeeding in life (Leder & Sampson, 2017). The academic buildings, wellness and health facilities, Bardwell performance space for auditorium, music school, riding Centre, Shipley athletic centre as well as the art centre have all been developed in alignment to the mission of equipping the girls for the future roles. The purpose has enhanced the part of the school in motivating the young women in risk-taking, discovering their voices and also in finding the strength they need in life.
Dana Hall mission statement has, therefore been an essential navigational tool in directing the current and the future activities of the school. The school has been able to move in the right direction, and the management has been making a sound decision in alignment with the mission. The school administration has been able to generate new ideas, focus their attention and energy and also remain consistent in their operations. The mission statement, therefore, acted as a guide to all the stakeholders who were involved in the management of the school.
3) Could the Athletic Center been done before the Science Center?
The Athletic Centre could not have been done before the establishment of the Science Centre. At the time of the establishment of the Science Centre, women were underrepresented in the science-related careers. The demand for science education for women in high school was therefore necessary. Dana School, therefore, needed to establish the science Centre where the girls understanding of their role, the natural world as well as the application of the science methodologies could be enhanced. Dana hall, therefore, needed a science Centre that was well equipped for preparing the girls to have a testing competition with the girls.
Jenkins had overheard one of the parents who had the potential of bringing his girls for enrolment in Dana hall enquiring about the Science Centre had requested to visit the facility. The question from the parent gave Jerkin the reality of how the school desperately needed the science Centre (Leder & Sampson, 2017). The query served as a wakeup call for Jerking to make efforts towards establishing the Centre. Additionally, the science Centre would have attracted more funding and students than the athletic Centre. With the limited finances, construction of the science Centre was more urgent than the athletic Centre. A science centre would also give the community a new perception about the school, thus increasing the enrollment.
4) Is it time for a new mission statement process?
In my opinion, I believe that is not the time for Dana Hall to process another mission statement. This is because the school still exists to fulfil its initial objective. The school have not removed any of its programs or expanded the audience. However; the school should build on the existing mission. This is because Dana Hall has evolved and therefore need to incorporate more elements in the mission statement. Incorporating more elements will involve building on the existing goals and expanding them further. The population has change where factors such as technology have made thing sampler. Revisiting the mission to add what is trending and withdraw what is old is essential rather than changing the whole purpose.
5) What advice would you like to give Caroline Erisman today?
The country has also been lagging in terms of female motivation, especially in the sectors of mathematics. Recent research has proved that male professors in the life sciences sectors are hiring fewer women in the industries as compared to the number of women employed by the female professors. The number of female professors is also low as compared to that of male. This is an indication that more need to be done to bring more female into the leadership position. The school, therefore, has a lot to do to expose the young girls to such skills which would further be refined in the colleges. The exposure would prepare the girls to be competent in high positions (Dale, 2018). The leadership skills should be cultivated during learning at the very early stages. The school should have a culture of raising leaders in the aim of creating future leaders. Learning in the school should be beyond the learning of math, science and English and should integrate the courses in their curriculum. Programs that are business-oriented and also technological advancement should be part of the programs.
The students should be taught at an early age on how they can be successful in the labour market. The school should foster the girl's programs and provide an environment where the young girls can excel to become leaders even in the absence of men. This is possible in Dana Hall as research has proved that in a single-sex atmosphere, the girls will get more engaged and also display confidence and competitiveness in the atmosphere.
The societal beliefs have changed; the environment has changed among other changes. It is therefore essential for Caroline Erisman to keep in touch will the current trends in business, politics, technology, markets and other industry to ensure that the young girls are equipped. Caroline Eris man should get more funding’s to develop technology Centre, which will encourage creativity and innovation. Caroline Erisman should initiate activities that aim at exploring new sites for developing new halls and new dormitories as the enrollment so predicted to increase. Computer halls should be increased to equip the students with modern technologies which will make them competitive in the external world. Caroline Erisman should source funds for renovating and also improving both the residential and the academic buildings, thus strengthening the current support of the children (Dale, 2018). Additionally, the school should plan more funding's and infrastructures that will accommodate the future growth of the school
It has been a struggle for women to come to the far they are and also succeed in the fight for equality. However, it is worth noting that the barriers to success still exists and that girls highest achievements still faces blocks. Equipping the girls with the right tools from the early stages via education and also teaching them on how to use the tools to bring down the existing barriers will be vital for the success of women. Sticking to the mission is the critical thing that has made Dana Hall successful and true to its initial motion. Caroline Eris man should therefore not deviate from the main mission, but her activities should be aligned with the task.
