Discrimination lawsuits remain the most frequent complaint filed with the EEOC; Disability complaints make up 33.4%, Race 33%, Sex 43.4%, Age 21.4%, National Origin 9.6%, Color 4.7%, Religion 3.7%, and Equal Pay 1.5%, .(U.S. EEOC, 2020). It is almost inevitable that every HR professional will face at least one discrimination lawsuit in his/her career. This is one reason HR must have a thorough understanding of employment discrimination law (state and federal) and also stay on top of any changes.
Some of the key federal discrimination laws HR must follow and understand include:
Equal Pay Act of 1963
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Civil Rights Act of 1991as well)
Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967
Pregnancy Discrimination Act
Americans with Disabilities Act
An overview of each law is covered on pages 111 - 116 in your textbook.
