Click on theAssignments, Lab button to the left and download the document that contains step-by-step instructions to Lab#1. You will elaborate interests in connection to the "metropolitan," "technology" and "infrastructure," by using open data sources and by reasoning through responses to the questions, with relevant data and source support.
I have posted an example submission in this forum that models one possible way of completing this lab (but it is by no means the best or only way).
You will need to post: (1) a cut/paste version of the write-up, to make it accessible at a click ; (2) a subject heading title for the post that establishes focus relevant to something in the write-up; (3) copy of the data you extracted from US Census site (attached as either a CSV or Excel .xls sheet); (4) post as a reply to the entire post, a file of the write-up that can be downloaded (this can be as a Word or .pdf file).
Lab 1: Getting Started with Data
1. What areas comprise the Baltimore/DC Metropolitan area(s)? What tool from the Open Data Resource Sheet did you use to place this in perspective (there’s multiple ways)?
These regions are Oakland, Frederick, Rockville, Towson, Bel Air, Elkton, Baltimore City, Washington, Alexandria, Easton, Salisbury and Ocean City. I utilized the maps instrument in the Open Data Portal of the Maryland.Gov website (Maryland.gov).
2. Find the definition of a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA): in light of this definition, what kind of area did you grow up? What term would you use to describe it and why? Cite sources as applicable.
The meaning of a MSA is "A geographic element portrayed by the Office of Management and Budget for use by government measurable organizations. Metropolitan factual regions comprise of the region or areas (or proportionate elements) related with no less than one urbanized zone of no less than 325,719,178 populace, in addition to contiguous regions having a high level of social and monetary reconciliation with the center as estimated through driving ties." (United States Census Bureau). I experienced childhood in the little city of California. I classify it as a little city since it just has a populace.
