Johnson, C. (2014, August 29) Face vs screen time: The technological impact on communication. Retrieved from https://www.deseretnews.com/article/ 865609628/How-technology-is-changing-the-way-we-communicate.html

In her Article “Face vs screen time: The technological impact on communication” Chandra Johnson maintains that technology is changing the form in which we communicate with others, and asserts that finding a balance is the best option. Technology is developing faster and faster every year, and it has been changing the way we live, communicate, and the way we learn. While I agree with almost every point Johnson makes, I think it is very important to mention that technology is one of the most important resources in our life, and we must adapt to it, and I also think that the information was not very organized, and that makes the readers confused.

Chandra Johnson makes four points in her article. The first point is that technology is affecting our communication skills. She used different statements from different professionals that tell how technology is affecting our life. She used the neurotransmitters as example because children who spend too much time interacting through a screen will not have their neural pathways develop correctly. The next point is that technology provides the resources necessary to show our emotions through online apps. Different professionals stated that face-to-face technology is a very useful method that technology provides us. They gave the example of foreign students that cannot see their families, and have to use the technology to communicate with them. The third point is the language that we use when we communicate through technology is different than the one that we use face-to-face. One very impressive fact is that the language used through technology is changing faster than language ever has. Another interesting fact from Johnson’s report is that people are using technology instead to another more direct form of communication because it is easier. Lastly, people must balance their use of technology adequately. Technology is very useful, but should only be used when needed, to avoid technology from consuming your everyday life. Johnson ends by using Lotherington’s phrase “We have changed, and the changes are here to stay”.

Johnson’s article is very interesting, and it has very good information about the different changes that technology is causing in our life. I agree with almost every point that Johnson explains in her article. Subsequently, I agree that technology is affecting our communication skills because it is making our life easier by allowing us to communicate to each other through technology rather than verbally face-to-face. Some examples of this method are the business meetings that are done online, Facebook, and instant messages. In addition to this, I think the information provided about the neurotransmitter is very impressive because it explains the damages of too much interactions with the screen. Even though I agree that too much technology is harmful for little kids, I think it is not a good idea to not let them be around technology because today’s life is based in technology, and this resource is developing even faster every year. I also think that Johnson’s article has a very good example about how foreign uses the online face-to-face communication with their parents because I am a foreign student, and apps like Skype or FaceTime are helpful to communicate with my parents. I totally agree that the digital language that we use is changing faster and faster everyday because when people use digital language they use this method because it is quicker, so people can abbreviate words or create new words. Even though this method can be quicker and easier, we must use it when it is appropriate because this method can make us prefer the easier way instead of another, more direct, way of communication. I think that finding the balance is the most important point in this article. Also, I believe that that Johnson could written this article with a little more organization to help the reader understand the changes and the true impact of technology. Parents will have to have more responsibility and will have to keep up with what their kids use on the internet because of the harmful side effects of being overexposed to a screen. And secondly, people have to know how to divide their time when they use technology because technology is not bad, but it has to be well used.

In conclusion, Chandra Johnson states very interesting and true points about how technology is changing our life through decreasing our communication skills, but at the same time this resource is developing faster and faster that we have to keep up with it. Even though I think that all the points covered for Johnson are very true, I think that she could have been more organized through her article because the readers can get confused. As technology is developing, our lives will be changing with it. This is why I believe that technology will be one of the most important resources in our life, and this resource will help us to make our lives easier. Ultimately, there are pros and cons to a world with increasing dependence on technology, but if used with caution technology will make our lives easier and help us stay connected.
