Critical Analysis Paper
Worth: 50 Points
This is a critical analysis paper about a serial offender. Essentially, you are going to write up a portfolio, so to speak, of the offender’s profile. This assignment is a summation of the course. You will want to make as many connections to the course, as possible. With each connection you make, you demonstrate that you fully understand the material/concepts covered. Please follow proper paper format (intro, minimum of three –you’ll likely need more – paragraphs, and a conclusion). Given the vast amount of detail expected, your paper should likely be a minimum of three pages.
With the information you found about your offender, discuss how a profile was created allowing investigators to link the cases together. The more connections you make, the better – though, they must be explained not just stated. Think about answering some of these questions:
· General questions – Did your offender have a signature? What was his/her modus operandi? Did s/he fit in to any typology? Discuss his/her choice in victims. What classification does the crime scene fall under? What classification does the offender fall under? Were any of the crime scenes staged?
· Crime reconstruction questions – Did any of this take place when law enforcement was attempting to identify a suspect?
· Evidence questions – Did the offender leave behind any traces of evidence? If so, what types (sequential, directional, locational, action, inferential, contact, ownership, associative, limiting, missing, etc.)? What conclusions can be made from that evidence?
You may choose any serial offender. Here is a list of offenders, keep in mind, you can choose a serial killer but there are too many to list:
· Serial Rapists: o AnthonySowell,LeaShakespeare,MichaelDixon,BennySela,RobertJohnFardon,Luis
Garavito, and Wuanardel Wells.
· Serial Arsonists:

Tips to avoid losing points:
· Your paper must be written in proper paragraph format. o No bullet points or incomplete sentences allowed.
· Please be sure to include an introduction and conclusion.
· Do NOT spend time providing me with a full background about the offender. If you spend the bulk of
your paper providing me with the historical or demographic background of your offender, you are just
filling space (and that is unnecessary because there is no length requirement).
· You are expected to write in APA format, this includes in-text citations and references. When in doubt,
be sure to cite.
· Your references should NOT be Wikipedia. One reference should be either the book or the lecture.
· Do NOT write in first person. This is a research paper, not an opinion paper.
