JOHN GOOLSBY
Goolsby’s Background information
John Goolsby joined Hughes Corporation in the year 1980 as the vice president of real estate. This was after the death of the founder Howard Hughes. During the time that he took the leadership role in the Howard Hughes Corporation, he took very great leadership roles. This made him become the president as well as the member of the board of governors and later becoming the president of the corporation in 1988. Two years later, in 1990, he became the chief executive officer. He established a very successful real estate company in Texas.
Goolsby’s accomplishments
In his tenure as the leader of the company, Goolsby helped the company to change from one that was involved in many diverse businesses to one focused real estate investment and Development Company (Quick, et al., 2017). The company through its effort became a well-respected company throughout North America.
The company was in frenzy and it was facing a lot of financial challenges when Goolsby was taking charge in the leadership position of this company. This was after the founder Howard Hughes died making the company destabilize. Upon his arrival, he brought with him a reputation for extensive expertise in the field of real estate and ethical standards which saw the corporation thrive a lot. He was able to effectively restructure the company, reinstate financial viability I this company, he was able to restore the sound and ethical business practices, and aided the creation of a system in which the legitimate heirs could be able to realize a financial gain from the company.
It is during his tenure that the corporation became a clack county public education foundation donor. This saw a lot of notable changes and contributions which directly affected the Clark county students. This was for instance by enhancing technology for schools in Clark county, launching the 1994 stars for children campaign, starting many television public awareness campaigns which were very instrumental in changing the lives of many youths in the county. Similarly, there was a youth leadership development grant which helped in supporting school-based initiatives that promoted educational excellence as well as family involvement. This is where John and Judy Goolsby began the Goolsby elementary school which was aimed at giving a solid foundation just like the one he received in the University of Texas Arlington in the early years of the 1960s.
Lastly, during his tenure, John Goolsby under his visionary leadership developed a master-planned community of Summerlin and a one hundred and fifteen master-planned business center. He continues being an active member of Summerlin even after he retires from the Howard Hughes Corporation, where he serves as a director of many companies as well as many charitable organizations.
Goolsby’s legacy
One of the biggest legacies left behind by Goolsby is that of leadership. GLA that began in 2003 from a gift given by an anonymous donor helped in establishing critical academy professorship and boosting scholarship levels. “Goolsby Leadership Academy has admitted more than 400 students, it has partnered with more than 30 executives, and it has provided scholarship amounting to more than $500000 and has graduated more than 350 scholars” (Cooper, & Leiter, 2017). The people who graduated from this institution have found jobs in many big companies such as BNSF, Microsoft, and PricewaterhouseCoopers among many others.
Similarly, more than 25 percent of the people who graduated from this institution have continued their education at law schools or graduate schools. Now that the school has been established, the college of business is already expanding the reach of the academy on-campus and more diversify its strength-based approach to leadership development. This, therefore, mean that this institution can go on ad evolves to increase the impact that it has been having to its scholars also to the local community and beyond. It is therefore important to note that Goolsby has been very instrumental in making an impact on business leaders. He believed that leadership cannot be defined by one characteristic or quality. Leadership is a mix of values, characters, competencies, behaviors, skills, and perspectives which are earned through a lifetime of self-investment and uncommon commitment. He has greatly helped in molding leadership in very many people through The Goolsby Leadership Academy which helps in invigorating convectional learning with an approach based on leadership principles as well as challenging students to advance and become problem solvers as well as ethical leaders. The academy is today recognized ad designed to be a cornerstone for the regional development of emerging business executives.
Lessons learned from studying Mr. Goolsby
One of the important things that I have learned from this leader is that ethical leadership is one of the most important aspects for one to become a successful leader in any discipline. This is where one will lead in a manner that respects the rights as well as the dignity of other people. Secondly, I have learned that leadership is a very important organizational role that affects every organizational matter from the morale of the employees, the satisfaction of the clients as well as the effectiveness of the organization (Ciulla, 2020). The leaders are therefore supposed to be good role models if at all they want to make a change in the entire organization. Apart from leaders being required to be competent, the leaders must be ethical in all the things that they do. This has inspired me that true motivation is inside oneself. It just requires that we have the enthusiasm and a positive outlook.
