Background
Dartmouth college first had an unofficial mascot in the 1920s called the “Indians”. Though this mascot was unofficial, it was widely accepted by the college. The image of a Native American man was put on football uniforms and other attire. Later, in the 1970s, the use of the “Indian” name and symbol were criticized, resulting in the discontinuation of the mascot (The “Big Green” Nickname). In 2003, the current unofficial mascot was created which is a beer keg named “Keggy the Keg” (Keggy the Keg). Again, even though it is not official, it is accepted by the students as the mascot and it comes out for games to represent Dartmouth. The students need an official mascot that is appropriate and applies to the NCAA policy to represent the spirit of Dartmouth. Changing the school mascot to “Green Warriors” will better portray the spirit of the community and be more inclusive to the underage students.
Scope
Dartmouth is an amazing school. It has been recognized by the world and has the prestige of being an ivy league college. Though the original unofficial mascot, the “Indians,” was removed due to the term becoming inappropriate, the symbol of a strong fighter matches the spirit and passion within the students at Dartmouth. Instead of an unofficial mascot that can’t be put on the Dartmouth website because of its inappropriacy, they should have a symbol of strength that can lead the athletic teams to victory. The new mascot the “Green Warrior” is maintaining the history of Dartmouth’s first unofficial mascot while complying with the new NCAA policy. The color green was added to represent the school’s colors and the nickname the “Big Green”. Students will be able to proudly cheer for the athletic teams and the school will have a more respectable mascot that suits Dartmouth.
Methods
The first step in changing Dartmouth’s mascot will be to get the general population’s opinion. A survey will be created using the SurveyMonkey website. A few questions will be asked such as “Do you agree with keeping the current unofficial mascot for Dartmouth?” and “Do you agree with choosing Green Warriors as the new mascot to represent Dartmouth?” This survey will be the main primary research done. Secondary research will be done on the feedback from the survey and other sites containing students’ opinions on “Keggy the Keg” (Ex. Fredman).
Project Management
The work distribution plan is set up in the chart below. Holly Grant is the leader and will be overseeing all areas to make sure everything runs smoothly. Mason Yaskovic is the secretary. He will be incurring everyone is getting his/her job done and be the main communicator to maintain order. Hassaan Saleh M Bedeiry and Craig Stuart Andrew McCall will be the main researchers and interpreters of information. All members will be contributing to multiple areas, but there are leading members in each field to remain organized. The work will be evenly distributed and members will be held accountable for their roles with the help of all members.
The formation of the proposal will be broken down into four major sections: finding the candidate for mascot reconsideration, finding an alternative to the current mascot that fits the needs of the university in question, formatting the information in a way that will show the university the benefit of changing the current mascot, and finally displaying this information in PowerPoint format for demonstration. Section one will be completed by May 28, Section 2 will be completed by June 6, and the final formatting in section 3 will be completed by June 20, leaving 8 days to complete section 4 before the deadline on June 28.
