Film Response #2: Lagaan Length: 500-750 words (ca. 2-3 pages) Overview For your second Film Response, you will evaluate the film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. Whereas “The Great Inca Rebellion” is a documentary, Lagaan is a fictional film set during the Raj--the period of British control in India. The film was produced in India in 2001 and it belongs to an Indian genre known as “Bollywood” musicals. In this essay, you will write “persuasive essay.” Specifically, you will evaluate the value of the film for students (such as yourself) who are taking a college-level survey course in world history. Research and Citation of Sources Since this is a response paper, you do not need to conduct any independent research. You should be able to complete this assignment using only the following sources: a) The film Lagaan b) Your textbook provided through MindTap (Hansen, Voyages in World History, 2nd ed.) c) The Slate.com video “Cricket for Americans” In accordance with MLA Style, you must provide in-text citations and a works cited list for these sources. I have included a works cited list at the end of this prompt illustrating how to cite these materials. You may copy and paste those entries into your own works cited list. If you consult any other sources, you must also cite them and include them in your works cited list. Thesis Since this is a historical essay, you need to answer a broader research question. That is to say, you need to defend a thesis. Your thesis should address the following question: What value does the film Lagaan have for the study of world history? In particular, consider how the film contributes to the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO’s) for this course: • • How does this film help students understand and “describe differences among interpretations of the past?” (Francis, 2) How does this film help students “identify and explain components of” Indian culture of the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries? (Francis, 2) Issues to Address As with the first Film Response, you need to defend your thesis with specific supporting evidence and arguments. You can provide that evidence by responding to some specific prompts in the outline below. Also, just like your first Film Response, you cannot simply answer each question in turn, as if you were filling out a worksheet. Instead, you need to write this as an essay with five separate sections of at least one paragraph each. Each section has a special role, as outlined below: 1. You need to begin with an introduction. In your introduction: Page 1 of 5 History 102 World History Since 1500 Assignment Prompt Film Response #2: Lagaan a. State your thesis. b. Explain why this question is important. c. Provide enough background information that your reader can understand what you will say in the body of your paper. d. NOTE: These elements do not need to be presented in this order. For instance, it is very common to insert a thesis statement in the last sentence of the first paragraph of a paper. 2. Before you can discuss the value of the film, you need to provide some background information. Summarize the film in no more than one paragraph to give your audience some idea of what the film is about. In this summary, explain the following issues: a. What is the historical setting of the film? b. Broadly speaking, what is the central conflict in the film? HINT: The action in the film centers on a game of cricket. If you are not familiar with the game, review the video from Slate.com “Cricket for Americans.” 3. Compare the way Lagaan depicts Indian history under British rule (AKA the Raj) with the way your textbook (Hansen) depicts the same history. a. In this section, consider at least one of the following questions: i. Does the film seem to contradict anything in the textbook? ii. Does the film present some element of India under British rule that adds to or supplements what your textbook has to say on the subject? b. In answering those questions, you also need to assess how useful or reliable the film is as a historical interpretation, even though the film is explicitly a piece of fiction. c. You need to support your comparison with at least one specific example. d. Some examples from the film might be valid evidence either for discussing the interpretation of history or identifying elements of Indian culture (see below). However, you must include two distinct examples in your paper. Page 2 of 5 History 102 World History Since 1500 Assignment Prompt Film Response #2: Lagaan Issues to Address (Continued) 4. Describe how this film can help students “identify and explain elements” of Indian culture which are “distinct from [cultural elements] in the twenty-first century United States” (Francis, 2). a. Since Lagaan is a twenty-first century film telling a story about India in the nineteenth century, you may discuss either representations of nineteenth-century India or the twenty-first century phenomenon of a “Bollywood” film. b.
