It is my pleasure to welcome you to your next dissertation class. Many of the items in this announcement were problem in previous classes, but I want you to have easy access to all the information. We have exciting projects to work on together and I look forward to continuing the process with you!
As you all know, we can interact frequently by phone and email, and through the Loud Cloud system. I’m here to guide you through the process, answer your questions, and to help you get connected to the myriad of resources available.
COURSE OVERVIEW:
As your Instructor, I will guide you through the courses and documents necessary to finish your dissertation. As you all know, I will do everything I can to expedite your process and keep you moving forward.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
You can find a lot of the classroom policies and other things you need on the Loud Cloud system as you are probably well familiar. I’ll review a few items in case you need them for immediate reference.
First is the Class Wall., which has a list of all the people involved with you in your journey to completing your dissertation. Second, the Forum (under the Tasks tab) is the place where discussions and questions are posted. As you all know, I create individual forums for each of you. That’s where we can write notes or attach files that are just between me and each of you. You cannot see each others’ individual forum. If your question or comment might have relevance to anyone else involved in your project,, you can ask your question on the Questions to Instructor, or in the Main Forum. Everybody included in the Class Wall will have access to this information.
We have a Milestones Handbook which will keep track of all the steps and when each step is completed. You will often be directed to important files and documents that provide more detailed information for each step of your dissertation process. Please take a careful look at the Course Materials to get an overview of the material.
As you know, APA style, proper grammar, and good writing mechanics will be expected throughout this process, and if you need assistance in any of these areas, you should find the Instructor Add-Ons to be quite useful.
Classroom policies are listed in Loud Cloud, and if you want further information about GCU, please go to www.gcu.edu/Policy-Handbook.php
I’m not going to tell you where you should be in the process of doing your work, because as you all know, everybody works at their own pace. There are challenges and obstacles that we cannot control. Hopefully, before the end of this course, you all have D-20 forms filed, which means your methodologist and I have approved your prospectus. Then, after it is given to and approved by your Content Specialist, you will have full support and acknowledgement from your entire Committee. I hope that by the end of this session you will be done with the literature review and have a few chapters behind you.
I expect you to work hard and deliver quality work on a timely basis, but always know that I’m here to accompany you on this journey, and help you in any way I can. Although you can ask questions in Loud Cloud, you can always reach me by phone. (We will be setting up regular phone calls, but always know you can call me at any time in between our scheduled calls.) I very much look forward to working with you and expect us to continue having a mutually enriching and enjoyable experience.
Following is my contact information.
CONTACT INFORMATION:
Dr. Sherry Spitzer
Email sherry.spitzer@my.gcu.edu Work Phone 415 812-4936 Office Location San Francisco, CA Office Hours My office hours vary but I am available by email and phone most days, between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., Pacific Standard Time. I will always return calls or emails within 24 hours, but usually much sooner.
I have a strong preference for phone calls over emails, if any discussion or decisions are necessary. I don’t like the back and forth of texts or emails when a two minute phone conversation can clarify issues so much more easily. You can always use emails to confirm our decisions.
If you have an urgent matter and don’t reach me by phone, please try sending a text to the above phone number. I’ll always get back to you as soon as I can. I’m available 12 hours per day, and I greatly enjoy contact with the learners. I very much look forward to working further with you!
PRIVATE GROUPS announcement (Me: Go to Roster, Manage Groups)
Hello to all, I just made private groups. This way, you can go to the forum and easily connect to a place where you and I can have ongoing conversations. The group will have your name, obviously, and then one word which tunes me into which dissertation is involved.
I hope you find this useful. I think it will make it much easier to communicate.
Thanks,
Sherry
