2.According to the reading when blacks have a generalized lack of trust in the biomedical community, something you can do is try to gain their trust and confidence in the way you verbally, and non verbally communicate with them. By making sure you are familiar with some of the ways they communicate can help you to not offend them, which makes them feel more comfortable. Asking open ended questions such as where their family originates from may be helpful to know which foods are popular among that region, and also how that region favors cooking their food. Another question to ask are what are their favorite meals to eat? This can help you to pinpoint directly what foods may be raising the blood pressure of your patient. This was also a follow up to the first question, which can help you see through the food how acculturated the patient is. Also, asking what they do for a living can help you to see if they are in high stress related occupations that can be raising their blood pressure. Non-compliance should be handled by first trying to address what could be causing the non compliance. The book explained that counseling in a group of family may be a better alternative to get cooperation, so if you counseled one on one maybe trying group counseling instead, which could lead to better results. Also if you are trying to make the patient change their entire diet, they may refuse because they do not want to feel socially isolated. Trying to find healthier ways to prepare the same meals, so they do not feel ostracized is the probably the better option.
