Technology in the Math’s Classroom. Nuguette Jeune ELM-470 Hullender, Bryan 09/27/2020
Introduction. The world is constantly changing and embracing the use of technology in all fields and this has been seen even in mathematics and STEM classrooms. The use of technology introduces multimedia to the classroom enabling students develop skills and motivating and animating the lessons (Waxman & Huang, 2016). Making mathematics virtual and presenting it in ways that the students are used to make it takes an extra step beyond student engagement. This presentation discusses some of the technologies that can be used in the classroom.
Mathematics is a subject that most students perceive as a challenge though it plays an important role in career development. With the embracing of technology however, teaching can be made more interactive and engaging. Technology embracing in mathematics can only be equated to offering personalized lessons to students. Technological evolution is fast and takes place every minute; it thus follows that in the spirit of embracing change, it should be embraced in the classroom setting too. Technology makes learning fun, and we should strive towards that to make our students better. 2
Geometry Pad. Geometry pad is an application that is used to create fundamental geometric shapes, explore and alter their properties and calculate various measurements (Lynch, 2017). The application displays the shapes on workbook with a rectangular coordinate system that can be zoomed and also one can scroll on.

Geometry pad is an application that can be used to teach students the fundamentals of geometrical construction. Some of the tools built within the application are; point, line, segment, perpendicular bisectors, tangents, triangles, arcs, sectors and polygons. Tools are also attached to create special triangles and quadrilaterals such as right angled triangles, isosceles triangles parallelogram and rhombuses. The application moves the concept of construction from the physical to the virtual graph paper.

Benefits of using geometry pad. According to Waxman & Huang (2016), a number of benefits are associated with using geometry pad. The include: For each shape, the application attaches customizable properties such as its color and background. The application gives students a chance to accurately present shapes without the errors associated with hand construction. By coming up with, constructing and correcting the errors in the objects, students increase their confidence and their skills in exploitation of technology as a learning tool. Instructors get a chance to observe the errors in individual students devices thus making the learning approach personal.
Geometry pad offers students a chance to work with and manipulate shapes so as to come up with new shapes thus increasing creativity. Further, by constructing shapes virtually, the inferiority complex associated with constructing less accurate objects is eliminated. When students feel that instructors are personally vested in their success, they tend to perform better. As the instructors correct the diagrams, students feel a personal touch and get the pressure to perform better. 4
Stepping stones 2.0 Developed by ORIGO, stepping stones is a comprehensive program making easier the understanding of mathematics concepts (Corcoran, Reilly & Ross, 2015). The software is intended for daily use in the classroom and offers unique digital tools for students and also supports teachers through embedded professional learning. Conceptual understanding is developed through offering a variety of virtual visual models
Stepping stone 2.0 interface.
Stepping stones offer a mathematical solution tool through a method that is both flexible and balanced. The software offers a library of materials that are reproducible for different grade levels . The resources offered are convenient, can be used as they are and offer a smooth instruction platform within the class. Stepping stones provide an online assessment platform that instructors can use to gauge the performance of their students. 5
Benefits of using Stepping Stones 2.0 The main advantage associated with the use of stepping stones is the balancing the dimensions of rigor. (Waxman & Huang, 2016). This is achieved by: Development of a conceptual understanding through using visual models. Creating opportunities to foster discourse within the classroom and to develop language. Fostering skills in thinking and also fluency. It offers multiple methods by which understanding, fluency skills and the application of mathematics can be assessed.
Stepping stones 2.0 integrates both print and digital resources so as to equip teacher with the digital skills required to instruct grade 6 mathematics. The platform in addition to the benefits is loaded with additional practice, effective teaching strategies and visual models to aid in teaching. Among the methods of fostering understanding is the use of a slate cast that allows the teacher to project a concept on the class whiteboard or reteach a concept.

Get the Math. One of the concepts of mathematics that is widely applied is algebra. Get the math is a website illustrating application of mathematics in the real world. By using the website, students get an actual feeling of how mathematics is used in fields such as music, fashion, videogames, and in the production of special effects. Interactive challenges are then offered that reflect the career the student chooses (Lynch, 2017).
Examples of Interactive Challenges.
When students associate the lessons they learn with what they perceive as their future dreams, it sparks an interest. Mathematics is a discipline that is applied in all fields thus students can relate with the application by finding their field of career and what mathematical concepts are used to shape it. To make it more fun, applications in the field is illustrated as games not as some grueling tasks that the student has to complete. The application paints mathematics and its application as fun. 7
Benefits of using Get the Math. Get the math is a personalized mathematics lesson that is offered via the use of technology with benefits such as: It can be used by students with disabilities because it has its basis on online virtual games that can be achieved personally. Further, features can be attached to enable project the individual performance on the classroom whiteboard where the instructor cannot check individual student’s work. Get the math's, just like Khan academy offers a personalized platform via which students can learn the application of algebra skills to their future careers.
One of the main roles that technology plays is connecting the concepts that we learn in the classroom to the real world instead of just handing students worksheet with problems to solve. Students can identify their careers and feel the impact that mathematics will have on their ultimate performance. Technology has also made it easier to teach students with communication problems as they can personally work on challenges via observation. Get The Math is a platform that equips students with necessary future skills to step up to and solve work problems creatively in future. 8
