In Week 2, you shared your work in progress on your evaluation essay and provided feedback to two of your fellow students. This week, you will do something similar with the problem-solution essay, but the process will be more formal, and the feedback will be more detailed.
By Wednesday, you must submit a rough draft of at least three pages of text, more if possible. As a preface to your submission, tell us about the general state of your essay so far, as well as what help you feel you need.
By Sunday, you must provide feedback to at least two of your fellow classmates. Prior to providing feedback, scroll down through the list of posts and identify students who have received the least amount of feedback first. In other words, don't provide a second round of feedback to a student until all students have received at least one round first.
In each feedback post, answer these questions using complete sentences.
1. What problem has the writer identified? Do you agree that it is a significant problem? 2. What are the causes of the problem? Has the writer identified these causes correctly? Can you think of any additional
causes? 3. What solutions has the writer considered? Are there any additional solutions you can think of? 4. Has the writer identified the best possible solution? Why, or why not? 5. What is the writer's call to action? Were you persuaded by it?

Class,
This week you are to start writing your problem - solution paper (at least 3 full pages) - we are fast getting to the time it all comes together. To help you write a good paper, this week you will do peer reviews for each other.
Note that you have some time sensitive elements to your assignment - Rough draft by Wednesday and peer reviews by Sunday. You also have specific feedback items to cover.
I will be looking at all of this for grade. In addition, don't forget your reading grade. Some has disregarded these points but believe me, they can still change your letter grade.
Have a good week.

Solving the Problem of Homelessness in Pinellas County
Imagine not knowing where you are going to lay your head at night, or when you will be able to take your next shower. The idea seems scary, and yet millions of people deal with it every day. Homelessness is a crippling cycle, and once someone finds themselves in the cycle, it is almost impossible to get out. The problem in my community is the homeless population. The area I live in is a highly sought tourist destination. With summer weather year-round, days on the beach, fun in the sun, and Disney Land just an hour away. People visit from all over the world, and my community does everything in its power to make them feel welcomed and wanting to come back. The issue with my community putting all this time in tourists' energy is we neglect our

homeless population. The homeless population is seen more as a nuisance that my community would rather overlook. According to (Pinellas County, Florida - About Pinellas - Facts, n.d.), "Pinellas is Florida's second-smallest county in Florida but has a Population of 916,542 residents making Pinellas County the 6th most populous in the state." As of 2019, Pinellas County has a homeless population of "11,843" (Moore, 2019.) Homelessness is becoming worse due to the lack of affordable housing, lack of mental illness/substance abuse support programs, and poverty.
The government has tried to address the homeless problem with a policy called "Housing First," a program that provides lifelong, permanent housing for all who enter homelessness without requirements for the individuals it seeks to help. According to Izumi, an expert in United States education policy, it has been unsuccessful. "The government's one-size-fits-all approach, called Housing First, is a policy that does not effectively help the homeless population. Housing First fails to include solutions to fix what caused the homelessness in the first place." (Izumi, 2020) Izumi states that a significant proportion of the homeless population deals with mental illness and substance abuse. The most effective way to break the cycle is to offer programs to help the population deal with the problem that caused their homelessness. So how do we solve a problem that is continually getting worse? As a community, we have a responsibility to figure out what solution will help end homelessness. A few different solutions have proven to work—addressing the shelter shortage and providing affordable housing, offering mental illness/substance abuse support programs, and helping lower poverty numbers.
The first solution would be coming together and demand our government to build affordable housing and shelter space. In Pinellas County, the lack of affordable housing and shelter shortage go hand and hand with each other. Tampa Bay Times reporter Waveney Moore interviewed City Council member Amy Foster and Susan Myers, who sits on the Pinellas County Homeless Leadership Board.
"The homeless crisis is fueled by low wages and a dearth of affordable housing. In Pinellas, 41 percent of residents live paycheck-to-paycheck. They can't afford the housing we have," said Foster. A hot real estate market has sent rents soaring. New housing stock, such as apartments, are too expensive. Traditionally cheaper sources of housing, such as trailer parks, are in short supply. "Many families are one or two paychecks from being homeless," Myers (Moore, 2019.)
With affordable housing limited, most families and individuals who end up homeless often turn to shelters only to be turned away. "There are only 185 beds for families and 1,055 beds for individuals." (Moore, 2019.) Building more affordable housing and shelter space will lower the number of the homeless population in Pinellas County.
Another solution is offering mental health and substance abuse support programs. A national study released by the California Policy Lab at UCLA reported "that 78 percent of the nation's homeless struggle with mental illness and 75 percent with a substance abuse disorder." (Izumi, 2020) Mental illness and substance abuse often take over a person's life and make it

almost impossible to maintain a job and handle everyday responsibilities. By offering support programs, the homeless can get help working through the problems that helped them become homeless.
The final solution is working to lower poverty numbers. Poverty is a primary contributor to homelessness; it is a cycle passed from parent to child.
"Children being raised in poverty do not have the same chances for success as children who are raised in the middle- or upper-income families. A child who cannot reach their full potential often repeats the cycle that leads to continued poverty, homelessness, and incarceration." (McLaughlin & Rank, 2018).

Homelessness is a very major issue all over. Theres many different causes for homelessness. Losing jobs, something major in someones life can lead to homelessness or even drug addiction. There is no specific cause to homelessness, but things happen to change people's lives and can cause them to be left with nothing and no home.

How Environmental Waste is Harmful to the Human Body and How We Can Help Cut Down on Waste Build Up
Have you ever thought about how harmful solid waste is on the environment? Or even on our health? Have you ever wondered where does your waste go after it’s picked up by the garbage men, or taken to the dump? If you were to ask me these same questions my answer to all would be, “No”. Once my trash goes to the compactor, it is no longer my issue; or so I thought. When I first started this assignment, I was more focused on how waste was an environmental issue within my community. It wasn’t until I started researching that I realized how much harm waste build-up is, not just in my community, but world-wide. Waste build-up is not just harmful to the environment, but it’s harmful to the human body as well. Just think we have to breathe in air that is already polluted with toxins caused by the solid waste that we create. Can you imagine what solid waste is doing to our health? Will we ever be able to breathe clean air? What are ways we can avoid waste build-up? These are just some of the questions surrounding the environmental issues of waste management. The biggest question is, what is the solution? Is there even one?
To answer that question, we have to first find the source of the problem. What is solid waste and how is it created? Solid waste is any unwanted or useless object that has been discarded by humans and sometimes even animals. Solid waste can be made of any type of material whether it’s plastic, paper, glass, metal, or organic it can be turned into a solid waste. Once solid waste is created, it is up to the solid waste management system to dispose of the waste properly. According to the article, “Waste Mismanagement in Developing Countries: A Review of Global Issues.”, by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, a lot of the systems were being mismanaged which caused contamination, social inclusion, and economic sustainability, and the only solution to this is integrated assessment and holistic approaches. (Int J Environ Res Public Health, 2019, p1). The Solid Waste Management System disposes waste in two different methods, open dumping and open burning, which I will discuss a little further into the essay. In the article, “Wastes: What are the Trends in Wastes and their effects on human health and the environment?” by the United States EPA, said that most solid waste management systems are located on landfills right outside of a rural area. These landfills typically depend on the open burning method for waste disposal. Though open burning eliminates a good amount of the waste it still plays an important role in polluting the air. Landfills that use open burning tend to collect waste like used tires, electronic waste, electronic equipment, used batteries and other hazardous waste, which causes global warming. When it comes to open dumping, these areas are uncontrolled sites, and tend to collect waste like solid waste, healthcare waste, and construction and demolition waste, which cause infectious diseases, marine litter, and informal recycling. According to Ann Simmons’ article, “The World’s Trash Crisis, and Why Many Americans are Oblivious”, the United States generates the most waste per day compared to any other country.

The United States generates about 624,700 metric tons per day of solid waste alone. According to the U.N. Agency there doesn’t seem to be a change in the future for solid waste build-up due to the constant growth in urban areas. Over time the development of businesses and housing continues to expand; creating more solid waste, and the more solid waste created; the more environmental issues arise. Simmons believed that the less fortunate areas were the most polluted due to the lack of financial resources. A lot of the areas that surround the landfills are heavily populated and become the source of contamination by bringing in flies, rats, and even mosquitoes, which all carry transmitted diseases. Contaminated soil from the landfills runs out into the ground and surface water contaminating the water supply. According to the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, about 80% of the surface and groundwater contamination comes from these landfills.
How does the contamination effect the human body? Whether it’s the contamination from the air or from the water both bring harm to the human body. Polluted air causes respiratory issues, eye and nose problems, and allergies; while water contamination causes irritation to the skin, gastrointestinal problems, and psychological disorders. Other health issues caused by landfill contamination include, Malaria, Chest pains, Diarrhea, and Cholera. In the article by Sankoh, Yan, and Tran, they stated that in Rushton’s research he found that the risk of Hepatitis B and HIV increased due to the health care and other medical waste mixing with domestic waste being discarded in the landfills. (Environmental and Health Impact of Solid Waste Disposal in Developing Cities: A Case Study of Granville Brook Dumpsite, Freetown, Sierra Leone, 2013).
Finally, what’s the solution to this problem? In my opinion, I don’t think solid waste or pollution will ever completely be resolved. I think with the right resources it can be reduced so that it can be better controlled. One-way communities can reduce the production of solid waste would be to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce the amount of waste being created, reuse products that can be reusable, and recycle items that can be recycled rather than just throwing them away. Granted, this is just one way to help improve the effects caused by solid waste build-up. Another solution would be to improve the production of the Solid Waste Management System.

I was never good at preplanning or outlines; I don't take it seriously, so I tend to write and rephrase in large blocks of text and mold the ideas until I like the fluency and delivery. I can generally pick up with ease once I re-read, but I'm happy with it so far. I know how I want to continue just refining the thoughts until im ready to print it

I also have never been too good at preplanning or outlines. I am not good at gathering my thoughts all at omce in an outline. I find it easier to just write different things out as paragraphs.
