She is a homeless veteran, who has over the past 6 months lived in and out of motels and in her car. She appeared to be hopeful and optimistic about starting online courses and sustaining permanent housing. She appeared to be clean, neat, and professionally dressed. Purpose of the session: The initial assessment to assist the client in establishing a plan to sustain permanent housing and to assess for other helpful resources and/or services, through techniques of asking relevant open-ended questions and active listening. Initial Observations: I met with B in the office at the VA Clinic. She appeared to be full of life and eager to get the process started for housing. She was very open about sharing personal information with me. After asking questions and providing B with a summary of what the program was about, the client was ready to work together. I have been back and forward from Illinois to Tennessee over the years so the last visit a few years ago I decided to stay. I currently work at Walgreens but they have recently cut my hours at work. SWI: Oh no! If you do not mind me asking “what was the reason for them cutting your hours?” B: Well, I was in the process of transferring to a Walgreens in the Florida area I have a family member that lives there. The car that I just purchased needed some major work done to it and I cannot afford to get it completely fixed at the moment. SWI: I can only imagine what you are going through and I hope you can find a solution to this situation. Have you spoken with your manager about working more hours, if available? B: I have but my manager just gave the majority of my hours to a new girl who just transferred to my store. SWI: I know that you said most of your hours were given to another worker. Do you think there is a possibility to pick up more hours at another store in order for you to gain those hours that you have lost and maybe more? B: I didn’t think to ask my manager about that!
