Context and subject is outlined below:

1. Issue:

Amazon is an online sales platform that makes hundreds of millions of profit in a year. The company sells from appliances, video games, to clothing, shoes and jewelry. No item is too small or too big  to be represented on that platform and that has been the case for years. When The world got hit by COVID 19, many companies feared the loss of profit and clients, because of the people losing their jobs. However, in the recent few months, like many other online platforms, we have noticed a spike in the sales of Amazon products. According to the Samuels from the Times magazine, Amazon’s “online shopping as total e-commerce sales nearly doubled in May” (2020) . The question is, how did Amazon manage to exploit these unfortunate conditions and turn them into a business sales ascent? In this presentation, we will talk about how the company’s profits have augmented during these past few months and how it has affected the company overall.

2. Data:

To answer the question of how Amazon’s sales have increased these past few months, we will focus on the annual 10-k filings of the company. That data is public record and was reachable through the website Investment Relations about Amazon. The data was downloaded in an excel format which will allow us to analyze it easily through Tableau. 

3. Anticipated Problems. Do you expect any problems with the data? Describe how you will deal with any problems with the data.

I believe the major problem we could run into while working with the data from the website would be that they are not up to date. The solution to that would be to always double check my source, since the 10-k filings are accessible through many different sites.

4. Visualization Plan. What is your plan for visualizing the results of your analysis? Decide what narrative you wish to tell and how you intend to present the data. (It is understood that once you get deeper into the data analysis using Tableau that good intentions cannot all be realized.)

We plan on mainly using Tableau Software for our visualization programs. We will be using Bar graphs and charts to further explain the data that are present in tables. Although not always desirable, I believe that pie charts could also help analyze the data from this particular set.
