1. Please define the term “foodways” in your own words.
Personal foodways reflection activity:
For this exercise, you will need to carefully document everything you eat for one day (or 3 meals) using the prompts below. In addition to documenting the material aspects of the food (what you ate), please reflect on the symbolic aspects of each meal as well.
*Note: we (the instructors) understand that food is very personal, and sometimes our relationships with food can be painful. Please include as much or as little detail about your mealsas you are comfortable doing (or, perhaps engage in more extensive reflection separate from the submitted assignment), and know that the goal of this exercise is reflection and exploration, not judgement.
Meal 1:
• What did you eat? How would you describe the food’s nutritional content? Its taste?
• Where did you eat? Why? How did the location of your meal affect the experience?
• With whom did you eat? How did the social elements of your meal affect the experience?
• What emotions were conjured by the meal? Did it make you feel loved, sad, happy, homesick, nostalgic, etc…?
• What role did power (refer to Godderis article for thoughts on food + power) play in the eating experience?
