I need two responses of at least 150 words each for the below students discussions for this week. Also in the bold below are the questions the students at answering.
Instructions:
1. Why is an update/patch process crucial for any organization to have and follow?
2. Discuss some issues that may arise when patching and updating machines.
3. List any observations, tips or questions about this lab that would prove helpful to fellow students prior to midnight on Wednesday and comment on other student posts with value added comments (not simply agreeing) by midnight Sunday for full credit consideration.
Student one:
The update/patch process is crucial for organizations and should be closely followed because software is inherently insecure. Software does consist of errors in which vulnerabilities could arise. In fact, many attacks happen because organizations do not patch their systems regularly which can/would have prevented the hacks. If an organization does not stay up to date on patches, and security updates, hackers can exploit known vulnerabilities with little work. (Admin, n.d.)
Although updates and patching systems is important, issues can arise. First of all, patches interrupt operations, but more importantly, patches and updates fail making the system unable to operate properly. This is why all updates should implemented in a test environment prior to being executed on the actual network. Additionally, the patches and updates could make it so certain programs cannot function properly. These two things are big issues because at times you cannot revert to a previously installed version and if you implement a patch or update that has not yet been executed in a test environment, there is a chance that you cannot revert to a previous version thus leaving your systems down until another update rolls out.
As usual, I have not yet gotten a chance to complete this weeks lab. I usually complete the labs later in the week after this forum post. Although, I have noticed that paying attention to the directions really does help. Sometimes I get ahead of myself and make silly mistakes and have a mini meltdown because I think I am going to have to redo the entire lab, just to realize I skipped a simple step, or overlooked pressing one button. Also, I have realized that I open WAY too many VM connections throughout my labs because I am not properly closing them out which has also caused me issues within the labs. That being said, I hope my struggles will help someone else.
