READ: Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green's The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents (yes, the whole thing)
WRITE: Using primary sources in The Cherokee Removal, write a 750-1,000 word (roughly 3-4 double spaced pages) paper that explicitly uses the primary source and responds to the following questions:
Americans of European ancestry often described Native Americans as "primitive," "savage," "barbaric," "uncivilized," and "backward," devoid of any kind of redeeming qualities or intelligence. Do the documents support this conclusion or do we get a different view of the Cherokee people? What role does gender, age, and education, for example, play in Cherokee society? Does removal cause a breakdown of society or does it make them stronger?HIST 101 PRIMARY SOURCE PAPER #2 ~ CHEROKEE REMOVAL READ: Theda Perdue and Michael D. Green's The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents (yes, the whole thing) WRITE: Using primary sources in The Cherokee Removal, write a 750-1,000 word (roughly 3-4 double spaced pages) paper that explicitly uses the primary source and responds to ONE of the following questions: 1. Does removal cause a breakdown of society or does it make them stronger? 2. Explain the process of removal and how the Cherokee responded to it. How did the Cherokee people express agency (control over their own lives) and maintain aspects of their culture and history? SAMPLE CITATIONS: Pick footnotes OR in-text citations for citing within your paper, including a citation to show where information, ideas, and quotes came from right when you use that information, idea, or quote so your reader knows exactly where it came from. Footnotes are strongly preferred: Footnote: When in a real paper the citation below would appear at the bottom (or foot) of your page. To insert a footnote in Word, go to “References,” then click “Insert Footnote.” • Example: Young Wolf, “Last Will and Testament, 1814,” The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents, 3rd edition, Theda Perdue and Michael Green, eds. (New York: Bedford St. Martin’s, 2016), 29-30. In-text citation: • Example: (Young Wolf, “Last Will and Testament,” 29) Notice how the footnote and in-text citations above are for the specific document being referenced/used and not the whole book. Theda Perdue and Michael Green are the editors, not the authors, of the documents and should not be listed as the authors unless you are citing/quoting the secondary material (which is permissible as long as you keep it to a minimum). Include a works cited page with a full list of ALL sources you used within your paper (everything cited within your paper should be included in your works cited) • Works Cited: Perdue, Theda and Michael Green, eds. The Cherokee Removal: A Brief History with Documents, 3rd edition. New York: Bedford St. Martin’s, 2016. REMINDERS: • All papers must be 750-1,000 words (roughly 3-4 double spaced pages). Papers shorter than 750 words will be penalized, but longer than 1,000 words is allowed (within reason). Keep in mind that citations, a works cited/bibliography, title page, images, and headers/footers do not count toward your word count. • We are asking for your opinion on some of these, but that does not give you license to use first person. Express your opinion without use first or second person (do not try to discuss “the author” in order to get around first person). • Make sure you clearly answer the questions posted and explicitly use the assigned primary sources. We want to see that you read/analyzed them, understood them, and used them to answer the question and formulate an argument. Use the primary sources as the heart of your argument. Papers with an overreliance on summary, background, or the narrative summaries in the book written by historians (rather than primary sources) cannot earn a grade higher than a C. • The book includes a brief history to give you the necessary context you need to understand the documents, which you need to read. HOWEVER, the purpose of this assignment is to see how well you can use the assigned primary sources to answer the question. You may use and quote the narrative summaries written by historians, but they should be a small part of your paper, and certainly not the majority. • Be careful with your citations. If you find that you have written a page (or even half of a page) without a citation, you likely are missing something.
