Hello Class,
There are some similarities and differences in leadership characteristics in the United States and global leadership. An example of similarities are found by House, Hanges, Javidan, Dorfman & Gupta (2004), they examined 17,000 leaders from 951 organizations in 62 societies around the world. They identified six global leader behaviors. They are charismatic/value-based leadership (inspire and motivate), human oriented leadership (compassion and consideration towards subordinates), self protective (focus behaviors on protecting individual and group), team oriented leadership (emphasis on team building and team diplomatic), Participative leadership (involving others in decisions), and autonomous leadership (individualistic decision making and independent from subordinates). There are also differences in leadership characteristics because of the different values and perspectives across the globe. Some examples of different values seen in Hofstede's dimension are collectivism/ individualism, feminism/masculism, power/ distance, uncertainty/avoidance (Jex & Brit, 2014) These characteristics are basically the opposite of each other. I think that the best way to accommodate the differences in global organizations is to be educated on the cultural differences. Find out what the culture values. Also have open clear communication to prevent problems.
