During this unit you will be studying a variety of short films. You will learn to
recognise how
narrative conventions
are used in those films to
present
and
develop
the narrative
By the end of the unit you will be able to:

Narrative conventions
are the standard ways of story telling within a medium
(eg
film)
. Narrative conventions you will need to know are:

Narrative Structure
-
the shape of a short film and how the exposition,
catalyst, complica
tions, climax and resolution create the story.
•
How
character
is created through any of the following costume,
actions, cinematography, sound, editing, setting, voiceover.
•
How
time
is handled in the films (eg compressed, elongated, distorted)
•
How
conflict
i
s shown (between characters or within characters and/or
how other confict is presented)
•
How setting is shown (time, place)
The assessment:

You must refer to at least
TWO
short films we have studied

your teacher will give you
a selection to choose from

Y
ou will write a report in an in class test

this test will be open book and you will use the
material you have written during the course of the unit

You will answer THREE questions about the use of narrative conventions in your films

In each question you
must answer on the use of the convention in TWO films
.
Note: You can’t present the same evidence (convention or example) for more than one
question.
