The topic selected for the research is child abuse in the society. The first importance of conducting research is to gather scientific information on the ways of preventing child abuse. Most of the factors leading to child abuse in today’s culture are avoidable and treatable. Besides, child abuse and neglect occurs in different forms, which should be understood in order to prevent them. At the same time, research would help in preventing the long-term cognitive, social, as well as behavioral issues linked to child abuse. For example, children who have experienced child abuse might be involved in juvenile delinquency, domestic violence, criminal violence, and drug abuse among other negative social problems (Shafe & Hutchinson, 2014). Additionally, research on child abuse can minimize the costs associated with the issue including foster care, medical care, or family counseling.

Many people in the society have experienced child abuse or they know someone who was abused as a child. Personally, although I did not experience any form of abuse during my childhood, I have relatives and friends whose parents were child abusers. My friends and cousins have told me in several occasions the painful experiences they had because of their abusive parents and caregivers. As a result, I might be a bit biased when researching child abuse since I already have personal connection to the issue.

When researching on the topic of child abuse, it is necessary to collect a wide of information. Firstly, information on the definition and types of child abuse is important to understand the extent of the problem. Gathering data on the etiological factors of child abuse can lead to the prevention of the issue. Moreover, the research will involve collecting information on the manifestations of child abuse including both short term and long-term effects. Finally, one cannot make an effective argument on the topic without presenting data about the current statistics of child abuse in the society.

Some individuals might oppose the argument on child abuse and claim that some issues termed as child abuse including corporal punishment are just parenting or cultural practices. Others will claim that unless a child has physical manifestations, then child abuse has not occurred. Another opposing argument is that poverty is unavoidable and can lead to child abuse. I would convince the people with the above opposing arguments by reminding them that research has shown that corporal punishment has negative effects on children. Besides, child abuse is not only physical but can also occur emotionally. I would also explain to the opposing individuals that poverty is not an excuse to abuse or neglect a child. Parents and caregivers can still love their children when with limited resources.
