“The Yellow Wallpaper” and “A Rose for Emily”

Charlotte Perkins Gilman in the “The Yellow Wallpaper” clearly describes a rather a cruel and oppressive relationship between Jane, who is very submissive to her husband John and how this pushes her and deteriorates her nervous condition into depression and what can be called insanity. O the other hand William Faulkner in the short story “A Rose for Emily” narrates a story about a young woman, Emily, who is completely influenced by her father and after the old man passes away, this affects her emotionally and she begins to deteriorate mentally. These two women are trust and depend on their significant others: Emily depends on her father and Jane depends on her husband. Soon the solitude of the women because of the time they live in and the fact that they are women.

Emily’s father is seen to bully the men who appear to develop an interest in his daughter Emily. She is secluded from any other interaction from the society and any stimulation of any kind. She is finally shuts herself up in the house. While “The Yellow Wallpaper” is descriptive in nature, “A Rose for Emily” is narrative in nature and the two stories have similarities and differences in their plots. The biggest difference between the two stories is their point of view. “A Rose for Emily is written in third person while “The Yellow Wallpaper” is written in first person. They both focus on how the society can influence the decay of a person’s mental state. Imagery and symbolism has been greatly employed and have rather surprising endings

The ladies in Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" and Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper" are made crazy on the grounds that they feel limited by the men in their lives. They withdraw into their own particular separate universes as a break from reality, lastly revolt in the main ways they can discover. Emily and 'John's wife,' the lady in "The Yellow Wallpaper", both feel suppressed and stifled by the men in power over them. William Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily", and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," are two short stories both consolidate characteristics of similarities and contrasts. These ladies are constrained into isolation only in light of the time they are lady. Emily's dad rejects every last bit of her imminent mates; the spouse of Gilman's storyteller confines her from incitement of any sort. She gets so confused that she even wants to marry him, she goes ahead and shops for him but when she can’t get him to her side, she opts to kill him, which she did. The narrator and the society watch Emily get old, unmarried, and separated from the society. It was his father’s notion that none of the young men who came around were good or a match ‘enough’ for someone like Emily.

The two stories both occurred in the Victorian time, when ladies were thought to be weaker than men, in this way inclined to slightness and "female issues." She finally goes crazy trying to imitate the imaginary woman she sees in the wallpaper.
