Two Argumentative Essays
People are arguing all the time. Arguing is a nature thing accepted from other people who don’t agree with a subject. People have different opinion in almost everything. Make most of the people agree with something is a hard thing to do. People are complaining about things they don’t like, and on the other hand some people disagree with you and think what they complaining about is right. When it comes to write an argumentative essay, the goal of the argumentative essay is to convince the others side whom disagrees with the topic. In order to give a good argument of subject and gain peoples opinion to agree and take your side “A good argumentative essay is always going to consider an OBJECTION to the main argument that was just given, and this objection is itself going to be an argument. The conclusion of this argument, the objection, is that the main argument that was just given is in fact a BAD argument, that the main argument fails in some way. It’s going to argue that the main argument relies on a false or implausible premise, or that the logic is weak, or that it fails to satisfy some other necessary condition for an argument to be good.” (deLaplante) . There are several different steps to follow to have a good argumentative essay. Choosing a side, gather evidence, facts, resources and etc.. “Two Years Are Better Than Four” by Liz Addison and “The New Liberal Art” by Sanford J. UNGAR. These are two essays that I will discuses in the essay and indicate which one is better. The argumentative essay is an essay in which you argue a topic. The argumentative essay starts with an introduction and it have two different sides. The introduction should get your readers attention and let them know what the paper will be about. The thesis must also let the readers know what your essay will be about. A good argumentative essay should needs to have sources and citing of reliable research, word choice and good topic sentences. Opinion is not enough.
First of all, in the essay “two years are better than four”, Liz Addison garbed my attention without any delay introduction paragraph. She started with very interesting quote “Colleges as America used to understand is coming to an end”. Which got me wondering what this essay will be about. Although, she didn’t have a thesis statement that introduces her essay that made it weak. However, The interdiction was very effective and organized. It is well written and on the subject. It helped me see that the essay is an argument with Mr.Perlstein opinion. By saying “…the smoke of a thousand bongs, and college really matter. Really matter?” The comments towards the professor were very harsh. She commented “Like a retired ballerina taking a set in the stalls”. That showed me that she strongly disagrees with him.
Most of her paragraphs there was not good topic sentences. She always started her paragraphs with question or a personal experience. For example, in the fifth paragraph she said “ Upon entry community collage I had but one O’level to my name”. Without topic sentences for the paragraph it made the reader find hard to understand what this paragraph will be about.
The writer had a compelling argument about the professor opinion about college when she said “my guess, reading between the lines Mr.Perlstein had never set foot in an American community college”. The writer has not mention an example or proves for her claim on Mr.Perlstein. She describes college very clearly. However, I cant tell was the point of it, for I cant see what her point in describing college was for. She did not monition the point she was arguing Mr.Perlstein side. In addition, the writer borough up her life experiences to prove her point and she choose a very useful and well-known historical character. Her experiences and the quote were well connected to her experiences and it strengthens her argument against Mr.Perlstein. In the last couple of paragraphs she kept describing a few thing that are out of the subject, her argument slowly getting weaker as she did not discoes arguable facts. She is complementing community collage a lot. She stated her opinion very strongly which is very good conclusion. She gives a good enough argument from her side she lacks Mr.Perlstein side of his opinion.
In the second essay “The New Liberal Art”. Sanford started his intro with something that could attract most people. By using the word “Economy”, he attracted me to read even further and by that he explained what the problem is after. He ended the first paragraph with a good thesis stamen that made the reader easily understand what the essay will be about. He got straight to the point of what he wants to say with that made the introduction very direct and clear.
The writer clearly organized and in order where he argued with one thing at the time. He numbered each paragraph to separate each argument and using the word “Misperception” to make it easier to the reader to understand each paragraph. Moreover, each paragraph started with a good topic sentence that shows exactly what point he will be argue in all paragraph. In his topic senses he talks about think that actually relatable to most people.
The writer has good argument side and explain good enough. He mentions the opposing side of the argument and explained it in detail. He explained what their argument is and what is support For example, he starts of with facts such as “ A liberal arte degree is a luxury that most families can no longer afford”. While supporting the opposing side’s argument with “Many families are indeed struggling in the depths of the recession, to pay for their children’s college education.” He also shows clear understanding the other side. The writer explains his side of the argument with persuasion of future benefits. The writer makes good use of quotes to to help his argument be stronger, like when he wrote ” Geoffrey Grain, president of Hart Research Associate suggest that the responsibility of higher education today is to prepare people “for jobs that do not yet exist.””
In comparison, I think “Two Years Are Better Than Four” by Liz is my favorite, because her choose subject that I can relate too. Her argument was very strong and firm. Even though, she did not mention the opposing side’s word and argument. However she convinced me.
In conclusion, both essays had good factors of an argumentative essay. They lack a few factors. However, in the end they are both very good essays. Both of the writers wrote the essays well using an argumentative method. They both use a good introduction and good chose of words. Both of the writers proved their point and accomplished their goals.
